A spring wedding for eighty, on a rooftop over the river. The couple wanted something that read composed from across the room and intricate up close — ivory on ivory, no contrast colour, all of the interest carried by texture and flower work.
A narrow three-tier with a slight taper, finished in tonal ivory buttercream worked smooth, then combed for a faint linen grain. The ranunculus are piped and assembled over two days and set wet the morning of, so nothing browns or wilts before the first toast.
Built here in almond & brown-butter with vanilla-bean cream. It takes just as well to lemon & elderflower for a daytime wedding.
Ordered most for weddings and formal celebrations — wherever one cake has to hold the centre of a large room.
up close
It read composed from across the room and intricate up close — exactly what we asked for, which almost never happens.
I have photographed two hundred weddings. I spent more time on this cake than I did on the rings.
